Blueback offers glimpse of submarine history

Just a short drive from the Puget Sound area, a piece of U.S. submarine history sits on the Portland waterfront. USS Blueback, the Navy's last non-nuclear fast attack submarine, is on exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
Visitors ages 3 and up can tour the boat for $5.75. The regular guided tour lasts about 45 minutes and includes information about how crews worked and lived on a sub less than 2/3 the length of a Los Angeles-class fast attack.

Women on subs: as soon as 2011

Women could begin serving on submarines as soon as 2011, starting with officers on ballistic- and cruise-missile submarines, like the ones based at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, according to a story from the Kitsap Sun.
Quoting Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. John Daniels, based at the Pentagon, the story said:

Women on submarines: Is it time?

The long debate about whether women should be allowed to serve on U.S. Navy submarines resurfaced recently after comments from top Navy leaders.
Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen told the Senate Armed Services Committee it's time to change the policy barring women from submarine duty.
