New working uniform making waves

The blue camouflage pattern of the new Navy working uniform is becoming a more common sight around the Northwest as local commands begin to adopt it. The uniform, known as NWU, became available at Navy Exchanges here in November 2009.

Lincoln underway for sea trials, then back to Everett

USS Abraham Lincoln left Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton on Wednesday after a nine-month overhaul. The ship and its crew will spend about five days conducting sea trials before heading back to their Naval Station Everett homeport, according to the Navy.

BAH rates drop for most Northwest bases

Military housing allowances across the U.S. will rise an average of 2.5 percent in 2010. But BAH rates for service members stationed at most Navy bases in the Northwest will go down slightly, due to falling real estate values.

An E-4 at Naval Station Everett will see about a 3 percent drop with dependents or a nearly 8 percent drop without. The same sailor at Naval Base Kitsap will see a 3.5 percent drop with dependents and a 1.7 percent drop without.

Navy Band Northwest will play a series of public holiday concerts beginning Saturday, Dec. 12 in Oak Harbor. The band also plays Dec. 13 in Everett, Dec. 16 at Fort Lewis and Dec. 18 in Bremerton.

Use the force: See Star Wars characters in Smokey Point

Members of Garrison Titan, the Puget Sound component of a Star Wars costuming group, will be at the Smokey Point PetCo on Sunday, November 29, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in support of a pet food and toy drive for the Stanwood animal rescue group NOAH.
See some of your favorite Star Wars characters in high-quality costumes, and get  your picture taken with them for free. Donations are encouraged but not required.

Flu basics can keep you from getting sick

Simple steps can help you avoid getting the flu and spreading it around this year. That's the message Navy medicine officials want to convey as they prepare for an influx of patients with symptoms from seasonal flu and the much-talked-about H1N1 strain, also known as swine flu.
"The thing we want people to do is take sort of a collective breath," said Capt. Dan Frederick, a regional public health emergency officer at Naval Hospital Bremerton.

High cost of living for Washington bases

An analysis by Military Times found the cost of living near bases in Washington state among the highest in the nation, outside of California, Hawaii and Washington, D.C.
The least expensive base in the state is Fairchild Air Force Base, ranking 98th out of 267 bases in the U.S. Naval Station Everett is the most expensive in Washington at 211th on the list.

USS Ingraham leaves for western Pacific deployment

The frigate USS Ingraham left Everett on Tuesday for a scheduled six-month deployment to the western Pacific. The ship and its crew of about 200 sailors and officers returned from their last deployment in May 2008 but have spent the last several months conducting exercises off the Pacific Coast.

We'll say 'Goodbye, Abe; Hello, Nimitz'

USS Nimitz is scheduled to arrive at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard late next year for maintenance. Then, according to U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair, the carrier will switch homeports to Everett to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln when it goes to the East Coast for refueling in 2013.

Armed Forces Day events in Bremerton, Marysville, Lake Stevens

The holiday to celebrate the contributions of all American troops is right around the corner on May 16. A series of events throughout the month of May pay tribute to military families in the Pacific Northwest.

You can find a complete list of events in Kitsap County from the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce Web site. Downtown Bremerton boasts the largest and longest-running Armed Forces Day parade in the country, followed this year by a Heroes Barbecue honoring Pearl Harbor survivors.

Year of the Military Family: What does it mean for you?

Congress declared 2009 the Year of the Military Family and urged President Obama to issue a proclamation doing the same. It's a symbolic gesture that doesn't come with any new benefits or funding for support programs.
