Help for military kids switching schools moves closer to being law
Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Members of the state House unanimously passed a bill Monday to adopt new rules for military children moving from school to school. The Senate passed the bill on March 10, so it now heads to Gov. Christine Gregoire for her approval.
With her signature, Washington would join at least 14 other states so far in adopting the Interstate Compact on Education Opportunity for Military Children. The compact aims to remove some of the barriers kids face when making frequent moves to schools in different states.
Sen. Steve Hobbs (D-Lake Stevens), an Iraq war veteran and one of the bill's sponsors in the Senate (SB 5248), issued a written statement Monday calling its passage a "win-win for everyone." He said:
“I’ve been working on this legislation for years, and I’m thrilled that it’s only one step away from becoming law. Our military families need and deserve this legislation. This bill will make it easier for these students to enroll in school, participate in educational programs, take part in sports, and graduate on time.”
