Remembering Pearl Harbor: 2009 events

Thursday, December 03, 2009

The battleship USS Arizona burns on Dec. 7, 1941 in this official Navy photo from the National Archives collection.

Ceremonies on- and off-base in the Puget Sound area on Monday, Dec. 7 will mark the 68th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. With the number of Pearl Harbor survivors dwindling, this could be one of the last chances for you to hear their accounts firsthand.
If you can't make it to one of these events, you can read stories online about what happened from the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Project. The Navy also has a collection of historical photos online from Dec. 7, 1941.

Local events on Monday:
Naval Station Everett: 9 a.m. onboard USS Ford at the naval station's south pier.
Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport: 11 a.m. at the Naval Undersea Museum (open to the public).
Naval AIr Station Whidbey Island: 10 a.m. at the Crescent Harbor Marina on the Seaplane Base, followed by a reception at the PBY Museum located in Building 12.
The Herald of Everett published a list that includes two other public ceremonies in Everett and Camano Island.
