This week in links: Family survey, Child care center, USS Missouri

Friday, October 16, 2009

I'm starting a new weekly feature here to share links about what's happening related to the military in the Puget Sound area, as well as other items of interest. You can get all these links as soon as they're posted by following @nwnavynews on Twitter. Have a link to suggest? Send me an e-mail or a message on Twitter. Thanks!
Links for the week of Oct. 16:

Unplugged: The Art of Ship Building (CBS News)
It's not in the Northwest, but CBS did an interesting video piece about a special Navy department devoted to model ship building.

Fleet and Family Readiness Customer Satisfaction Survey (NavyLifePNW.com)
Share your thoughts about the Fleet and Family Readiness programs you use in this 15-minute online survey, open until Oct. 30.

A Change I Would Like to See (SpouseBUZZ)
A Navy spouse explains an aggravating experience trying to get an ID for her 10-year-old daughter. Join the conversation in the comments.

If (Navy) heroes had Tweeted (NavyTimes' ScoopDeck blog)
The Navy celebrated its 234th birthday on Oct. 13 and Navy Times celebrated with a clever post imagining what Navy greats over the years might have had to say if they were plugged in to social networking.

Bremerton Navy base to get new $4.2-M child-care center (Kitsap Sun)
The Navy awarded a contract last week to build a new child-care center at Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton that will accomodate 65 toddlers, up to 3 years of age.

Navy patrol boat squadron looks at Jacksonville, Kings Bay (Jacksonville.com)
Buried in this story out of Florida is a tiny mention that a homeport in Kitsap County is also being considered for the Navy's new riverine patrol boat squadron.

Free tours Thursday to celebrate Blueback submarine's 50th birthday (The Oregonian)
The now retired submarine USS Blueback had its 50th birthday party this week at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. You can visit it there on the Portland waterfront as a museum exhibit. I did that as a kid and it was great fun.

The few, the proud, the alone (Los Angeles Times)
Hat tip to Stars and Stripes for posting a link to this story about a Marine Corps video highlighting the issues Marine reservists and their families face on the homefront. They often live far from the support networks and services provided by Marine Corps bases. I'm sure there are many reservists and National Guard members in the Puget Sound area who can relate to this.

Library at Bremerton Navy museum to be named for Rehs (Kitsap Sun)
Puget Sound Navy Museum in Bremerton is naming its library after Louise Reh and her late husband, Capt. Frank Reh. Louise Reh is well known in this area as the co-author of "Nipsic to Nimitz," a definitive history of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard's first 100 years.

A 'mighty' former Bremerton resident gets an $18M facelift (Kitsap Sun's Bremerton Beat blog)
A longtime fixture in Bremerton's mothball fleet, USS Missouri is undergoing work in a Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard drydock before going back on display at Pearl Harbor for public tours in December.
